BOOKR Kids is developing a new AI-driven, multi-adaptive online language placement and proficiency assessment system with HUF 249.57 million (approx. EUR 662,000) in non-refundable European Union funding, implemented under the Széchenyi Plan Plus programme (DIMOP-PLUSZ-1.1.2/B-24).

Beneficiary name: Móra-BookR Kids Children’s and Youth Digital Publishing Limited Liability Company

Project ID: DIMOP_PLUSZ-1.1.2/B-24-2025-00004

Subject of development: Development of a multi-adaptive, AI-driven language proficiency assessment test

Amount of contracted funding: HUF 249,634,807

Planned project completion date: 31 January 2028

The project is implemented with the support of the European Union and co-financed by the Hungarian State.

Why we’re doing this

Teachers already do an incredible job differentiating -but they’re often asked to do it with limited, imperfect information. A single paper test, a quick oral check, or last year’s grades can’t capture the reality of a learner’s skills today -especially in mixed-ability classrooms.

What schools need is an assessment that is:

  • Fast (so it fits real school schedules),
  • Accurate (so learners start at the right level),
  • Skill-sensitive (so it doesn’t reduce “language” to one score),
  • Practical (so teachers can act on the results immediately).

What “AI-adaptive” means in practice

Adaptive assessment isn’t about making a test “harder” or “easier” randomly – it’s about using each response to identify the learner’s current zone and then selecting the next task accordingly.

In the system we’re building, the test will:

  • adjust difficulty in real time,
  • move through tasks in a way that stays challenging but achievable,
  • and produce outputs that are usable for teachers (not just a score).

The goal is a placement experience that feels less like an exam and more like a guided pathway that meets students where they are.

Multi-adaptive = more than one dimension

Language ability is not one single skill. A learner might have strong listening but weaker reading, or solid vocabulary but low confidence in speaking. A single-number result often hides what teachers actually need to know.

That’s where the “multi” in multi-adaptive comes in. We’re designing the assessment to capture a more nuanced learning profile through multimedia tasks, helping schools understand strengths and gaps across key areas.

How this fits into BOOKR Class

BOOKR Class is built around the idea that learning sticks better when students are genuinely engaged. That’s why we use story-based, interactive learning and provide teachers with tools to manage progress in real time.

This new assessment strengthens that ecosystem by making the starting point clearer and the learning journey more precise. Placement results will feed into:

  • better grouping,
  • more realistic targets,
  • and more personalised learning plans inside BOOKR Class.

What this means for teachers

Our aim is simple: reduce guesswork.

With a more accurate placement and clearer diagnostics, teachers can:

  • identify who needs support vs. challenge,
  • set measurable goals,
  • track growth over time,
  • and intervene earlier when a learner starts to fall behind.

In short: less time spent trying to “figure out the level,” more time spent teaching.

What this means for students

Our aim is simple: reduce guesswork.

For students, the biggest benefit is emotional as much as academic: starting at the right level builds confidence.

When learning feels achievable, students are more likely to:

  • participate,
  • take risks,
  • keep going,
  • and develop the habits that lead to long-term progress.

What’s next

Development will run through multiple phases- from research and prototyping to piloting and refinement – with completion expected by early 2027. We’re building this with real classrooms in mind, and we’ll share learnings along the way.

If you’re a school partner interested in participating in pilots or giving feedback on what “useful assessment results” look like in practice, we’d love to hear from you.

Raz-Kids vs BOOKR Class: Which Digital Reading Platform Actually Works for Your School? https://bookrclass.com/blog/raz-kids-vs-bookr-class/ Tue, 27 Jan 2026 16:21:15 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=13330

Who should read this?

If you’re an instructional lead, ELA/ELL coordinator, or principal staring down another decision about digital reading tools for K-8, grab your coffee. We’re breaking down what these platforms do differently, what they cost (really), and how much work they’ll create for your already-busy teachers.

The quick comparison

Let’s talk money

Raz-Kids Pricing

Learning A-Z sells licenses per teacher/classroom, covering up to 36 students per product. In recent promos (2024/25), discounted pricing landed around $121.50, though regional resellers often quote $150–$170 for a one-year classroom license. If you’re bundling (think Raz-Plus + Foundations A-Z), the math shifts – and so does your purchase order.

BOOKR Class Pricing

Teacher and small-group plans are posted publicly; school-wide packages require a custom quote based on student count and contract length. Do you want budget clarity? Start with a pilot using a small-group tier, collect data, then scale up with real numbers in hand.

The Real Cost Calculator

Here’s the trick nobody tells you: normalize to cost per active student per month across the full academic year. Then factor in teacher time. If a platform shaves 30–45 minutes per week off grading and assignment prep, you’re effectively “refunding” salary hours. Multiply that by your local teacher’s hourly rate, and suddenly a slightly pricier tool might actually save money.

Setup: How much pain are we talking?

Raz-Kids integrates smoothly if your district already lives in the Learning A-Z ecosystem. Kids log in via the Kids A-Z app, teachers assign leveled books and assessments, and progress tracking lives in dashboards.

BOOKR Class keeps setup simple: create student accounts, share login codes, assign books or curated playlists, and watch live stats roll in to the Teacher’s Dashboard. It runs on all devices (Android and iOS mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, as well as on computers and laptops (Mac OS and Windows)).

Verdict: Neither platform will make your IT department cry. Both are designed for real classrooms.

Support when things go sideways

Learning A-Z offers a comprehensive PD catalog with micro-learning modules, live webinars, onsite training, virtual sessions, and train-the-trainer programs for district-wide rollouts. If you need extensive professional development, they’ve built the infrastructure for it.

BOOKR Class goes further by combining strong support with practical classroom resources: dedicated email support (support@bookrclass.com), regular webinars, an annual teacher training series, plus ready-to-use worksheets, monthly activity collections, and multiple teacher handbooks. You’re getting more than tech support: you’re getting teaching materials for every month that you can use immediately in your classroom. The Teacher’s Dashboard guides and the help center handle technical questions, while the worksheets and activity collections address the “what do I actually do with this?” problem.

Bottom line: Learning A-Z focuses on professional development and training. BOOKR Class gives you that plus a steady stream of classroom-ready materials—worksheets, activities, and teaching guides you can print and use right away. If you want support that extends beyond learning the platform and into actual lesson planning, BOOKR Class delivers more.

The features that actually matter

Library & Content

  • Raz-Kids is created for native speakers and focuses on K-5/6 with 29 reading levels and a steady flow of new leveled readers. EQuizzes are included, so comprehension checks are one click away.
  • BOOKR Class was specifically created for English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, and stretches K-8 with 9 CEFR-aligned levels (pre-A1 to B2+) and Lexile metrics. The animated stories and interactive games? Kids actually want to use them. If you serve ESL or EFL students or follow CEFR frameworks, this alignment is gold.

Assessments (AKA “How much grading am I doing?”)

  • Raz-Kids gives you online running records and Quick Check quizzes with skill-based reports. Teachers still need to review and analyze.
  • BOOKR Class auto-grades exercises and uses AI to generate CEFR-aligned vocabulary and comprehension tests. Game-level insights show exactly where kids stumble. Less manual grading = happier teachers.

Teacher Dashboards

  • Raz-Kids lets you assign by level or skill, track progress, and pull proficiency reports. It’s comprehensive.
  • BOOKR Class gives you detailed insights: real-time reading stats, time-on-task, completion rates, level progression, and breakdowns for each exercise. Assign individual titles or reading lists. If you rely on data to guide your instruction, this dashboard shows you exactly what you need to know.

So… which one?

Don’t guess. Pilot both.

Run a controlled pilot with a small cohort – maybe two or three classrooms per platform. Track:

  • Student growth (reading level gains, comprehension scores)
  • Teacher time saved (grading hours, assignment prep)
  • Student engagement (login frequency, time on task, book completion rates)

Give it a full semester (or at least a trimester), then compare the data. The “best” platform is the one that moves the needle on student outcomes and makes your teachers’ lives easier.

Because let’s face it: even the fanciest EdTech is useless if teachers abandon it by November.

Final thoughts

Both platforms work, but they work differently. Raz-Kids is the established option with a long track record. BOOKR Class is purpose-built for English language learners with animated stories, interactive games, and CEFR alignment that meets multilingual students where they are. The automation (auto-graded exercises, AI comprehension tests) cuts down teacher workload significantly, and the engaging, interactive format keeps kids actually reading – not just logging in and zoning out.

Your move depends on your students, your curriculum, and your team’s capacity. Just promise us one thing: get it in teachers’ and students’ hands, and let the evidence guide you.

(And if you can get that 50% first-year discount from BOOKR Class while piloting? Even better.)

BOOKR Class Selected for UNICEF’s Learning Cabinet of Trusted EdTech Solutions https://bookrclass.com/blog/bookr-officially-listed-in-the-unicef-learning-cabinet/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 08:02:32 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=13078

The UNICEF Learning Cabinet is a curated discovery platform designed to help ministries of education, donors, and policymakers identify high-quality digital learning tools they can trust. Built around the EdTech for Good Framework, it evaluates solutions against rigorous criteria: safeguarding children’s safety and privacy, demonstrating measurable improvements in learning outcomes, ensuring inclusive and age-appropriate design, and proving readiness to reach diverse contexts, including low-resource environments.

The platform is built on the EdTech for Good Framework, which evaluates tools along five core pillars:

  1. Safety First – privacy, data security, responsible use, avoiding harm.
  2. Impact on Learning – evidence that the tool produces measurable, positive outcomes.
  3. Designed for Children – age-appropriate, engaging, user-friendly designs.
  4. Ready to Reach All – scalable, cost-effective, works in various contexts (connectivity, infrastructure, etc.).
  5. Leave No One Behind – inclusive of learners with different needs, backgrounds, and geographies.

Gaining a place in the Learning Cabinet is not easy. Fewer than 5% of applicants are accepted following expert review and validation. BOOKR Class did not just pass this process but received the highest possible evidence rating – 3/3. This rare recognition means that our research-based methodology, supported by measurable results from both internal and external studies, meets the highest international standards. For us, impact has always been the most important measure of success, and being able to demonstrate it at this level is a milestone we are deeply proud of.

This comes at a critical moment. Around the world, the learning crisis continues to grow: in many low- and middle-income countries, seven out of ten 10-year-olds cannot read and understand a simple text. Education leaders are faced with the overwhelming challenge of choosing among thousands of EdTech products, many of which lack reliable evidence. The Learning Cabinet was created precisely to cut through this noise – highlighting tools that are safe, effective, and scalable. Being listed here means BOOKR Class is now more visible than ever to the decision-makers who can bring our solution to children who need it most.

For us at BOOKR Kids, this endorsement is also deeply personal. We built BOOKR Class with the conviction that learning can and should be both joyful and effective. That belief has guided everything – from the design of our digital library to the research partnerships that test and refine our impact. The recognition by UNICEF validates this approach, giving us the chance to bring our vision to more classrooms, more ministries, and more learners worldwide.

This achievement also belongs to our team. From our educators and researchers to our developers and content creators, every person at BOOKR Kids has contributed to building a solution that is not only creative but also scientifically sound. The Learning Cabinet listing is both a reward for this hard work and a motivation to keep pushing forward.

We are honored to join the community of innovators that the Learning Cabinet represents. Together, we share a responsibility: to ensure that digital education tools deliver real learning outcomes and to support education systems in addressing the global learning crisis.

The English Learning App That Speaks Teen: Meet BOOKR Next https://bookrclass.com/blog/english-learning-for-teens/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 11:54:54 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=12967

Diving Into Teen Minds: What Today’s Learners Really Need

If you’ve ever tried teaching a group of teenagers, you’ll know this: they’re curious, creative, and capable – but also distracted, digitally fluent, and hard to impress. Teaching English to Gen Z (born roughly 1997–2012) and Gen Alpha (born 2013 onwards) means stepping into a fast-paced, tech-savvy world where attention is a currency and relevance is everything.

These learners grew up in an always-on digital environment. They value self-expression, real-world connection, and personalized experiences. They’re socially aware, visually driven, and often more emotionally attuned than we give them credit for.

So what does that mean for us, as English teachers?

We need teaching tools that are as dynamic as our students. Tools that don’t just translate grammar rules but speak their language – visually, emotionally, and contextually.

What’s Going on in Their Brains?

Adolescence is a time of intense brain change. On a neurological level, teenagers are undergoing rapid neural rewiring, as synaptic pruning and myelination optimize pathways for speed and efficiency. But while the brain becomes faster, it’s also temporarily “in flux,” making teens more emotionally reactive and impulsive.

There’s also a brain imbalance: the reward system (which seeks excitement and validation) develops earlier than the self-regulation system (which governs planning and impulse control). This explains why teens often take risks – not because they don’t care, but because their brains are still developing the ability to pause and think ahead.

Risk Taking: Not Always a Bad Thing

Teenagers need to take risks – it’s how they learn. The real question is: what kind of risks are they taking?

While maladaptive risks (like cheating or substance misuse) can be harmful, adaptive risk-taking, such as public performance, entrepreneurship, or creative expression, can be powerful learning drivers. BOOKR Next encourages these positive risks through challenges, self-expression opportunities, and reward-based progress tracking.

Gen Z & Gen Alpha in the English Classroom: A Quick Look

When it comes to language learning, these generations…

  • Expect interactive and multimedia-based content over static worksheets

  • Prefer stories that mirror real-life dilemmas—from climate change to identity

  • Respond well to visual feedback, progress tracking, and gamified learning

  • Thrive when learning is relevant, personalized, and socially connected

Yet, in many classrooms, we’re still trying to engage them with methods built for students of a different era. No wonder motivation drops and attention fades.

We knew something needed to change.

From Insight to Innovation: Why We Created BOOKR Next

BOOKR Next was born from these exact classroom realities.

We sat down with educators, curriculum experts, and – yes – teenagers themselves. We asked: What would it take to truly engage today’s learners in English? The result: BOOKR Next, a comprehensive digital reading and learning platform tailored to the needs, interests, and habits of learners aged 10–18 (and adult beginners, too).

Everything – from the UX/UI design to the library structure, content topics, and teacher dashboard – was developed based on what actually works for Gen Z and Gen Alpha learners.

The Big Picture: What Do These Learners Really Need?

Beyond engagement, today’s learners are asking for purpose, safety, and empowerment. They want learning that aligns with their values, supports their well-being, and helps them grow personally and socially.

From climate consciousness and radical inclusivity to digital citizenship and mental health awareness, the expectations have evolved. And so should our tools.

Challenges in Teaching English Today

Of course, teachers face real challenges when working with Gen Z and Gen Alpha learners:

  • Fragmented attention in a notification culture

  • Exam-versus-engagement tug-of-war

  • Slang-rich input, academic-poor output

  • Wide proficiency gaps in the same classroom

  • Over-reliance on instant translation and AI tools

BOOKR Next addresses these head-on with structured yet flexible content, multimedia support, and data-driven tools for differentiation.

Classroom Tips: How to Teach English to Gen Z and Gen Alpha

If you’re teaching these generations, here are four guiding principles that inspired our app design – and can inspire your classroom, too:

1. Make it meaningful.
Teens don’t just want to learn how to use language – they want to understand why. Use stories that touch on identity, social justice, mental health, or science and tech. These spark real conversations and critical thinking.

2. Let them explore.
Self-paced reading with choice builds confidence and autonomy. With BOOKR Next, learners can browse fiction, non-fiction, news, and even anime-inspired stories – all aligned to CEFR levels.

3. Use visual and auditory input.
Many students are visual and audio learners. BOOKR Next integrates animations, authentic narration, and sound effects – not just to entertain, but to deepen understanding and engagement.

4. Reward progress, not perfection.
Whether it’s through badges, reading streaks, or AI-generated pronunciation feedback, Gen Z and Alpha learners thrive on instant, positive reinforcement.

Other strategies that help:

  • Start with a hook, keep it bite-sized

  • Blend media and tech strategically

  • Connect to real-world purpose

  • Offer choice and enable social sharing

  • Embed digital citizenship skills

  • Encourage reflective pauses

  • Gamify the learning journey

Designed with Teachers in Mind

We know that tools only work if they’re practical for teachers.

That’s why BOOKR Next includes a Teacher Dashboard to assign readings, monitor progress, and access printable worksheets or activity cards. You can use it in-class, remotely, or in after-school settings. The platform is also fully compatible across devices.

And with 400+ books (and growing), you don’t have to reinvent the wheel – just pick, assign, and let the app do the heavy lifting.

The Big Picture: Preparing for Exams and Life

BOOKR Next doesn’t just prep learners for CEFR-aligned English exams (from Pre-A1 to B2). It also helps them build:

  • Social-emotional skills

  • Critical thinking

  • Media and digital literacy

  • Cultural awareness

In other words, skills that matter beyond the classroom

Final Thought

If we want to inspire a lifelong love of learning, we need to meet our students where they are – and where they’re headed. BOOKR Next isn’t just another English learning app. It’s a learning environment built around the real lives, needs, and minds of today’s learners.

One Big Global Classroom: Celebrating the BOOKR SDG Heroes Challenge https://bookrclass.com/blog/celebrating-the-bookr-sdg-heroes-challenge/ Thu, 08 May 2025 10:48:59 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=12868 BOOKR SDG Heroes Challenge to inspire students and teachers around the world to take action, raise awareness, and build a more sustainable future together. And the results? Nothing short of inspiring. ]]>

Why do the UN Sustainable Development Goals matter in education?

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are more than just global targets – they’re a blueprint for building a better world by 2030. From quality education to clean water, climate action to gender equality, these 17 goals help students understand the real-world challenges their generation is facing.

united nations sustainable development goals no poverty quality education zero hunger good health and well-being gender equality clean water and sanitation affordable and clean energy decent work and economic growth industry, innovatin and infrasturture reducent inequality live below water climate action responsible consuption and production sustainable cities and communities life on land peace, justice and strong institutions partnerships for the goals

But more importantly, the SDGs empower young learners. When integrated into the curriculum, they spark critical thinking, empathy, and problem-solving. They shift the focus from memorizing facts to becoming active global citizens – exactly what education should be about.

“Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) equips students with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to act for a more sustainable future.”

Why we launched the SDG Heroes Challenge

We created the BOOKR SDG Heroes Challenge with one goal in mind:
To turn classrooms into catalysts for change.

Here’s what we set out to do:

  • Encourage active engagement with SDGs
We wanted students and teachers to go beyond theory and bring the goals to life through creative, hands-on projects.
  • Inspire a new generation of changemakers
By giving students a voice and a platform, we aimed to nurture their sense of responsibility and empowerment.
  • Build a global classroom
Through shared experiences, we hoped to connect learners from different backgrounds – and show that collaboration has no borders.

A global effort: from Jordan to Brazil

We received amazing entries from schools across the globe – from Jordan to Brazil, Hungary to Indonesia. Students created videos, presentations, and digital projects that blew us away with their creativity, compassion, and commitment.

Some highlights from the challenge:

  • Health and Wellbeing
Students tracked their physical and mental wellness with custom-made wellness trackers, promoting healthier daily habits.
  • Life Below Water
Learners explored the importance of clean oceans and created awareness campaigns to protect marine life.
  • Clean Energy
From solar-powered models to posters promoting energy efficiency, clean energy was a hot topic among entries.
  • Equality and Inclusion
Many students highlighted gender equality and disability inclusion, sparking powerful discussions in their schools.
  • Care Packages for Those in Need
Teams prepared and delivered care packages to those in need, showing empathy in action.

And the winners are…

After reviewing so many thoughtful, creative, and inspiring projects, we’re thrilled to announce the top entries of this year’s BOOKR SDG Heroes Challenge:

🥇 1st Place – Rosary School College (Teacher: Sana Amareen)
🥈 2nd Place – Colégio São Vicente de Paulo (Teacher: Fernanda BeNiero)
🥉 3rd Place – Okan School (Teacher: Nivi Özkan)

Congratulations to these incredible teams for their passion, teamwork, and dedication to the SDGs!

But truly, every submission made an impact. We’re grateful for the many amazing project works we received – each one a testament to the creativity and heart of classrooms around the world. Thank you for showing us that change begins with education, and that our global classroom is full of heroes.

What we learned from the challenge

The BOOKR SDG Heroes Challenge showed us that students want to get involved. They want to contribute, learn, and make a difference. All they need is the opportunity.

We also saw how teachers are the real superheroes – guiding, mentoring, and empowering their students every step of the way.

And most of all, we saw how education can unite us. Despite different countries, languages, and cultures, these young heroes reminded us of something important:
We’re all part of one big, global classroom.

Ready to bring the SDGs into your classroom?

You and your students can still be part of this global movement.
It’s never too late to start meaningful conversations, spark real-world action, and connect with other classrooms working toward the same goals.

Smart testing, smarter learning:Introducing BOOKR’s New Adaptive English Placement Test https://bookrclass.com/blog/english-placement-test/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 08:43:38 +0000 https://bookrclass.com/?post_type=blog&p=12197

What is a Placement Test, and Why Does It Matter?

A placement test is a useful tool that helps figure out where a student stands in a particular subject, especially in language learning. By assessing different skills, these tests guide teachers in placing students in the right courses or assigning tasks that suit their current knowledge. This way, the learning journey is both engaging and rewarding for students.

Why Placement Tests Are a Game Changer

Placement tests play a key role in creating effective learning environments. When we know a student’s proficiency level, we can ensure they’re not struggling with content that’s too hard or feeling bored with material that’s too easy. This balance keeps students motivated, helps them make steady progress, and builds their confidence as they face new challenges at a pace that’s just right for them.

what is a placement test

ESL Placement Tests: Why They’re Essential

An ESL (English as a Second Language) placement test is designed to assess the English skills of non-native speakers. Getting placement right is critical because it directly impacts a student’s ability to pick up new language skills and use them in real-world situations. A well-placed student is set up for success, learning in an environment that’s supportive and paced for growth, which leads to a much more satisfying and successful learning experience.

At BOOKR, student-centered learning is the heart of our work, which is why we’ve integrated placement tests into our platform.

Exploring Adaptive Language Testing: Personalized Paths to Language Success

As educators and ed-tech enthusiasts, we all share a common goal: to give students the best possible start in their language learning journey. One of the most effective tools to ensure this is adaptive language testing — a method that tailors the assessment process to each learner’s individual abilities.

But what exactly is adaptive language testing, and why is it so crucial, especially for young learners?

Let’s dive into these questions and explore how this approach can benefit both teachers and students and see how our newly launched English placement test works.

What is Adaptive Language Testing?

Imagine you’re trying to figure out exactly where a child stands in their English learning. You don’t want to give them a test that’s too easy, making them bored, nor one that’s too hard, leaving them frustrated. This is where adaptive language testing comes in.

Adaptive testing is like a personalized quiz that adjusts its difficulty based on how the student answers each question. If they get a question right, the next one will be a bit harder; if they miss it, the following question will be a little easier. This way, the test quickly zeroes in on their exact level of proficiency without overwhelming or underchallenging them. This method is based on Item Response Theory (IRT), which basically means that the test is smart enough to adapt to the child’s skills in real-time, offering test items for the right level of difficulty each time.

Why is Adaptive Language Testing Important?

We know that getting an accurate understanding of where a student is in their learning journey is essential for language learning. Here’s why adaptive testing is so important, particularly for young learners:

what is adaptive language placement test
  • Right Start, Right Level

Starting a student at the correct level is key to their success. If they begin too high, they might struggle and lose confidence. If they start too low, they might not feel challenged and could lose interest. Adaptive testing helps place each learner in the perfect spot, ensuring they’re learning at a pace that’s just right for them.

  • Quick and Accurate

Traditional tests can be long and tedious, often leaving test-takers tired and disengaged. Adaptive tests, on the other hand, are quicker because they focus only on the questions that matter. By quickly honing in on the student’s proficiency, these tests reduce unnecessary stress and provide accurate results faster.

  • Boosting Confidence and Engagement

Kids are more likely to stay engaged and confident when they’re neither bored by too easy questions nor frustrated by ones that are too hard. Adaptive testing keeps the challenge level just right, making the experience more enjoyable and less intimidating.

  • Comprehensive Skills Assessment

Adaptive tests don’t just look at one aspect of language learning. They cover a broad range of skills: reading, listening, grammar, and vocabulary — giving a complete picture of where each learner stands. This ensures that all of their language abilities are being developed evenly, which is especially important at a young age.

BOOKR’s Adaptive English Language Placement Test:
Designed with Today’s Young Learners in Mind

placement test by bookrclass

We are excited to introduce our own new adaptive English language placement test, specifically crafted to support young learners as they start their language learning journey.

This tool is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a globally recognized standard for measuring language proficiency across various learning contexts.

Threshold-Based Adaptive Testing

Our method works by setting certain proficiency thresholds. As the child progresses through the test, the difficulty level changes until the test determines that they’ve reached their appropriate level. This approach is great for making sure a learner isn’t placed too high or too low in their learning path.

Here’s how it works:

  • A Gentle Start

The test begins at mid-level difficulty, giving the system a chance to understand where the student might stand currently in their learning. This starting point is carefully chosen to be challenging enough to engage the child but not so difficult that it discourages them.

treshold based adaptive test
  • Smart Questioning

As the student answers each question, our adaptive system adjusts the difficulty in real-time. If they’re getting the hang of things, the questions will become a bit harder. If they need more support, the test will offer slightly easier questions. This ensures that each child is both challenged and supported, leading to an accurate assessment of their abilities.

  • Instant Feedback

One of the features that makes the test appealing is real-time feedback. As soon as the test is complete, both teachers and students receive immediate insight into the student’s performance. This not only helps in understanding where the learner is but also in motivating them by showing their progress instantly.

  • Why Comprehensive Assessment Matters

Assessing multiple skills — reading, grammar, and listening — is essential because language proficiency is multifaceted. A student might excel in understanding written texts but struggle with listening comprehension or grammar. By evaluating all three areas, our test ensures that each student’s strengths and weaknesses are considered when determining their language proficiency level.

  • Aligned with International Standards

To ensure that our adaptive placement test is accurate and reliable, we have carefully aligned each text and question, as well as the resulting levels with the appropriate CEFR level. This was achieved through a detailed analysis of sentence structures, verb forms, and vocabulary range. Additionally, we have used extensive data collected from our users to determine which linguistic elements correspond to each CEFR level.

Let’s see what this means in more detail.

Precision in Testing: Aligning with CEFR

  • Reading Comprehension: Understanding Language in Context

Our reading comprehension questions test how well students understand English in real-world situations. We put a lot of emphasis on vocabulary, starting with pictures, single sentences, and short texts for beginners. As students move up, the texts get longer and cover different styles, like comments, dialogues, interviews, and blog posts. They need to find specific information and also understand the main message and what the writer is trying to say. This way, we can see how well students truly understand the language.

  • Listening Comprehension: Authentic and Engaging Content

In the listening section, we focus on how well students can hear and understand English. At the most basic level, they work on matching sounds with letters and recognizing simple words and sentences. As they progress, they listen to more natural conversations, like dialogues and interviews. The goal is not to catch every word, but to understand the main ideas and be able to respond in a conversation. We use recordings with native speakers to make the listening feel real and similar to everyday situations.

align with cefr
  • Grammar Skills: Mastering the Building Blocks of Language

Our grammar questions are all about how well students can use English in context: we don’t require them to explain explicit grammar rules but rather apply them in example sentences that they often face in everyday language use. Learners usually see one or two sentences that they need to complete by choosing the right verb form, sentence structure, or tense. This helps us see if they can apply the correct grammar naturally, reflecting what’s expected at their proficiency level.

Engaging and Relevant Content for Today’s Learners

Understanding that students engage more with content that resonates with them, we have selected topics that are relevant and interesting to younger learners as well. Our test includes genres that students encounter in their everyday lives as well as in language exams, such as interviews, social media comments, blog posts, and short messages.

For younger learners or those at lower proficiency levels, we’ve incorporated colorful illustrations to make the questions more relatable and easier to understand. This visual support helps bridge the gap between language ability and comprehension, making the test a more enjoyable experience for young English learners.

As for design, our test has a very user-friendly interface to help our students focus and go through the questions as smoothly as possible.

engaging relevant content

Your Pathway to Progress: BOOKR Levels Aligned with CEFR

Our language proficiency levels have also been attuned to CEFR levels. The test determines the level of proficiency of each student based on their answers given to the questions the system selects adaptively, in real time. At the end of the test, students immediately receive their current level, which can range from 1 to 9.

Here is how the BOOKR Levelling System is aligned with CEFR levels:
