Here’s what we set out to do:

• Encourage active engagement with SDGs
  We wanted students and teachers to go beyond theory and bring the goals to life through creative, hands-on projects.
• Inspire a new generation of changemakers
  By giving students a voice and a platform, we aimed to nurture their sense of responsibility and empowerment.
• Build a global classroom
  Through shared experiences, we hoped to connect learners from different backgrounds – and show that collaboration has no borders.

We received amazing entries from schools across the globe – from Jordan to Brazil, Hungary to Indonesia. Students created videos, presentations, and digital projects that blew us away with their creativity, compassion, and commitment.

A placement test is a useful tool that helps figure out where a student stands in a particular subject, especially in language learning. By assessing different skills, these tests guide teachers in placing students in the right courses or assigning tasks that suit their current knowledge. This way, the learning journey is both engaging and rewarding for students.

Placement tests play a key role in creating effective learning environments. When we know a student’s proficiency level, we can ensure they’re not struggling with content that’s too hard or feeling bored with material that’s too easy. This balance keeps students motivated, helps them make steady progress, and builds their confidence as they face new challenges at a pace that’s just right for them.

An ESL (English as a Second Language) placement test is designed to assess the English skills of non-native speakers. Getting placement right is critical because it directly impacts a student’s ability to pick up new language skills and use them in real-world situations. A well-placed student is set up for success, learning in an environment that’s supportive and paced for growth, which leads to a much more satisfying and successful learning experience.

One of the most effective tools to ensure this is adaptive language testing — a method that tailors the assessment process to each learner’s individual abilities. 

But what exactly is adaptive language testing, and why is it so crucial, especially for young learners? 

Let’s dive into these questions and explore how this approach can benefit both teachers and students and see how our newly launched English placement test works.

Imagine you’re trying to figure out exactly where a child stands in their English learning. You don’t want to give them a test that’s too easy, making them bored, nor one that’s too hard, leaving them frustrated. This is where adaptive language testing comes in.

Adaptive testing is like a personalized quiz that adjusts its difficulty based on how the student answers each question. If they get a question right, the next one will be a bit harder; if they miss it, the following question will be a little easier. This way, the test quickly zeroes in on their exact level of proficiency without overwhelming or underchallenging them. This method is based on Item Response Theory (IRT), which basically means that the test is smart enough to adapt to the child’s skills in real-time, offering test items for the right level of difficulty each time.

We know that getting an accurate understanding of where a student is in their learning journey is essential for language learning. Here’s why adaptive testing is so important, particularly for young learners:

Starting a student at the correct level is key to their success. If they begin too high, they might struggle and lose confidence. If they start too low, they might not feel challenged and could lose interest. Adaptive testing helps place each learner in the perfect spot, ensuring they’re learning at a pace that’s just right for them.

Traditional tests can be long and tedious, often leaving test-takers tired and disengaged. Adaptive tests, on the other hand, are quicker because they focus only on the questions that matter. By quickly honing in on the student’s proficiency, these tests reduce unnecessary stress and provide accurate results faster.

Kids are more likely to stay engaged and confident when they’re neither bored by too easy questions nor frustrated by ones that are too hard. Adaptive testing keeps the challenge level just right, making the experience more enjoyable and less intimidating.

Adaptive tests don’t just look at one aspect of language learning. They cover a broad range of skills: reading, listening, grammar, and vocabulary — giving a complete picture of where each learner stands. This ensures that all of their language abilities are being developed evenly, which is especially important at a young age.

We are excited to introduce our own new adaptive English language placement test, specifically crafted to support young learners as they start their language learning journey.

This tool is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a globally recognized standard for measuring language proficiency across various learning contexts.

Our method works by setting certain proficiency thresholds. As the child progresses through the test, the difficulty level changes until the test determines that they’ve reached their appropriate level. This approach is great for making sure a learner isn’t placed too high or too low in their learning path. 

Here’s how it works:

The test begins at mid-level difficulty, giving the system a chance to understand where the student might stand currently in their learning. This starting point is carefully chosen to be challenging enough to engage the child but not so difficult that it discourages them.

As the student answers each question, our adaptive system adjusts the difficulty in real-time. If they’re getting the hang of things, the questions will become a bit harder. If they need more support, the test will offer slightly easier questions. This ensures that each child is both challenged and supported, leading to an accurate assessment of their abilities.

One of the features that makes the test appealing is real-time feedback. As soon as the test is complete, both teachers and students receive immediate insight into the student’s performance. This not only helps in understanding where the learner is but also in motivating them by showing their progress instantly.

Assessing multiple skills — reading, grammar, and listening — is essential because language proficiency is multifaceted. A student might excel in understanding written texts but struggle with listening comprehension or grammar. By evaluating all three areas, our test ensures that each student’s strengths and weaknesses are considered when determining their language proficiency level.

To ensure that our adaptive placement test is accurate and reliable, we have carefully aligned each text and question, as well as the resulting levels with the appropriate CEFR level. This was achieved through a detailed analysis of sentence structures, verb forms, and vocabulary range. Additionally, we have used extensive data collected from our users to determine which linguistic elements correspond to each CEFR level. 

Let’s see what this means in more detail.

Our reading comprehension questions test how well students understand English in real-world situations. We put a lot of emphasis on vocabulary, starting with pictures, single sentences, and short texts for beginners. As students move up, the texts get longer and cover different styles, like comments, dialogues, interviews, and blog posts. They need to find specific information and also understand the main message and what the writer is trying to say. This way, we can see how well students truly understand the language.

In the listening section, we focus on how well students can hear and understand English. At the most basic level, they work on matching sounds with letters and recognizing simple words and sentences. As they progress, they listen to more natural conversations, like dialogues and interviews. The goal is not to catch every word, but to understand the main ideas and be able to respond in a conversation. We use recordings with native speakers to make the listening feel real and similar to everyday situations.

Our grammar questions are all about how well students can use English in context: we don’t require them to explain explicit grammar rules but rather apply them in example sentences that they often face in everyday language use. Learners usually see one or two sentences that they need to complete by choosing the right verb form, sentence structure, or tense. This helps us see if they can apply the correct grammar naturally, reflecting what’s expected at their proficiency level.

Once you have answered enough questions to determine your level, the test will stop automatically and give you your result. It’s as easy as that.
